Notes:
The cottage has a wild lakeland graden, and it is not suitable for unsupervised young children. The garden is on a hillside, and a stream runs through the garden . The cottage inside is not equipped with child safety features. We do not recommend the cottage for families with young children. There are quite steep stairs inside to the bedrooms, and outside steps to gain access from the drive to the terrace which make it unsuitable to guests with walking difficulties. Brockstone Cottage is on the Wordsworth Walk between Grasmere and Rydal. Access is on a tarmac road off the A591 from Wordsworth's Dove Cottage ,Grasmere or from White Moss House ,for half a mile, followed by a track for the last 300 yards. There is plenty of parking space, and a turning circle at Brockstone Cottage. The track becomes a walking path only after Brockstone Cottage, leading to Rydal Village, Rydal Hall and Rydal Mount.

Lake District Walking: Brockstone Cottage is the perfect base for a walking holiday in the Lake District. Located on the famous 'Wordsworth Walk', also known as the ancient 'coffin road' from Rydal to Grasmere, step out of the dor and go! Gentle walks lead to Rydal and Ambleside, round Rydal Water and Grasmere Lake, to Grasmere Village, with stops for a pub lunch.Go along Loughrigg Terrace ( where Rene Zellweger filmed Miss Potter ) to Elterwater (pub lunch at the Brittania!) or over Silver Howe or Loughrigg for great views. For high level walks, Nab Scar and the Fairfied Horseshoe , ( over 3,000 feet) a classic circular Lakeland mountain walk, start from Brockstone Cottage. The Coniston Fells and Langdale Pikes can be seen from Brockstone Terrace, Helvellyn is a short drive. We are happy to advise and lend maps and books. The many walking shops in the area offer a huge range of equipment at all prices. At the end of the day, relax in the spa bath and watch the sunset over the Lake District Mountains.

Food and drink in the Lake District: The Lake District offers a huge range of excellent pubs, cafes and restaurants. In Grasmere, Villa Colombina (Dove Cottage restaurant) is 15 minswalk from Brockstone Cottage, and the Jumble Room and all the other Grasmere restaurants are just 1 mile away. Croft House bakery offers good cakes and pasties, Heidi's Deli has sandwiches and there is a pretty good Coop with reasonable wines and beers. Ambleside (2 miles) has a wide choice of restaurants, and a good selection of take away food. Zeffirellis Restaurant and Cinema offer an excellent 2 course vegetarian meal and reserved cinema seat for just £15.95 (book in advance). Booth's Supermarket Windermere offer stop quality local food, and an award winning wine section. Lucy's of Ambleside is an excellent deli and food shop, and Nick's Kitchen Ambleside has ready meals made on site - no need to do lots of cooking for a great meal! There are lots of good pubs with Lakeland Beers in Rydal and Grasmere, and the Drunken Duck is 15 mins.

Lakeland shows, theatre,music, films:
If you have any energy left after a day in the fresh air, there are many great venues offering theatre music and film. The Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, has an excellent repertoire of plays throughout the year, and also has music events and literary festival. Zeffirellis Cinema Ambleside shows 5 films every day with live music weekends. Dove Cottage, Grasmere has a visiting poet and poetry readings most Tuesdays. The Old Laundry, Bowness, has plays, music and live events throughout the year. The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, has an interesting mix of music, theatre and cinema. The Lake District Summer Music Festival takes places in Ambleside and the surrounding villages in August. All Lakeland villages have their own shows and sports days throughout the summer, with fell racing, Cumberland wrestling, cycling, track running, hound trails and many other sports and entertainments. Sheep dogs shows, garden festivals, jazz and beer festivals too many to mention! See golakes website!
